Week 10: The Snowy Day

Finally, we were able to read The Snowy Day by Ezra Jack Keats! I think we put off this book twice because for some reason every day we were going to read this book there was no snow here in Buffalo.

The Snowy Day is about a boy named Peter who wakes up one day, looks out his window, and sees a winter wonderland. He decides to go outside and the story begins as we see all the fun Peter has in the snow. Peter makes tracks with his shoes and a stick, gets into a snowball fight, makes a snowman and snow angel and even sleds down a big hill. Before going in Peter makes a snowball and hides it safely in his jacket pocket for the next day.  Of course the snowball melts which Peter discovers before going to bed that evening.  He is sad and dreams all the snow has melted from the warm sun.  Peter is very happy to wake up the next morning and see that the snow is still there and it had not melted away.

I found so many great activities for this book we probably could have used it for 2 weeks.  First here are some pictures from our snowy day!

Co-op day with our friends included many activities including:

Gluing marshmallows on the letter S

We watched a jar of snow melt in the warm house.

Our Bible verse for the day was Psalm 90:12
"So teach us to number our days that we may get a heart of wisdom".

Snack consisted of rice cakes, fruit flats, raisins and carrots. Each child attempted to make a snowman out of the ingredients they were given.

Next the kids got to play in the "snow", shaving cream snow! Great activity that my kids in particular loved. I gave them tools to help model what Peter did while he was outside in the snow.  The Little People and sticks were to make tracks in the snow.  We will definitely be using shaving cream again for an activity. I found this idea as well as our snack idea on a website called:  The Iowa Farmers Wife.

Using these Easy Clean Flat Trays from Oriental Trading Co. really helped contain the mess that the kids made. We use these trays almost daily for coloring, painting, and all other crafts. Great investment!
